Our Story

Souper Sopa is the first and original soup-to-go or “sopa par llevar” outlet in Puerto Vallarta. It is managed and operated by the Covarrubias family. The space was originally Mama and Papa’s grocery store. “The Store” was the first family owned grocery store on Basilio Badillo. They sold groceries and dispensed advice for 40 years until mama fell ill and papa retired at the age of 93.

The space was vacant for a number of years until their son Marcelo, owner of the restaurant next door“La Fonda”, came up with the idea of soup to go. Marcelo, and his partner Lori, researched soup restaurants and designs in their travels. The name Souper Sopa came from their grand niece who for a long time called herself Super Chica! Planning started in June 2014 and the idea was to provide a healthy alternative to convenience store fast food and taco stands. After a few bumps on the road Souper Sopa opened on December 23, 2014. It quickly became apparent that tortilla soup was everyone’s favourite so it became the signature soup and is on the menu every day.

Our Clients

Our goal is to provide our clients with a healthy and tasty alternative to the convenience stores and taco stands in the neighbourhood. Many of our customers live and/or work in the area. Our customers come from local businesses, the theatres, spas, kids with 25 pesos, chefs, and ex-pats who live here or spend their winters in Vallarta. We also get our share of tourists who are here for a week or two and want a great home-made soup.
